Finger Lakes Region
The Finger Lakes Service Learning Institute
(FLSLI) provides services to both the Finger Lakes and Western New
York regions. The goal of FLSLI is to develop a network of quality
practitioners who are able to unite community and character education
with NYS standards. To further this goal, grant opportunities and
free staff trainings are available to the region as well as lending
library items schools may borrow to conduct their own staff trainings.
The Finger Lakes Service Learning Institute
The Finger Lakes Service Learning Institute
(FLSLI) is run by Albion Central School District and covers schools
in Allegany, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Erie, Genesee, Livingston,
Monroe, Niagara, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Yates, Wayne and Wyoming
counties. The institute has been able to fund over 35 regional grants
in the last three years as well as provide in-service opportunities
for hundreds of area and statewide participants.
Blending Service Learning with Character Education
The FLSLI views character education as an
intentional and proactive effort to promote positive behavior and
character development in students. Service learning takes character
education to a higher level of knowing and applying traits of character
by calling upon students to practice character in the community.
Students should be facilitated to synthesize and evaluate their
own behaviors and beliefs in relation to themselves, classmates,
teachers and community. A systematic focus on reflection can allow
these behaviors to be drawn into the forefront of students thinking.
