Service Learning Project Description:
Students working with local AARP help to develop energy conservation
brochures that will help local elderly conserve energy and money
during the fall winterizing season.
Goals and Objectives

winterize their homes.

impact on elderly with fixed income

for home winterizing.

Objective: Students will seek out assistance
for the elderly to winterize homes before the winter cold weather
sets in.
Key Activities
Key Planning Activities
1) Discuss energy conservation programs that are available with
local energy providers.
2) Talk with local home center to get donated materials and advice
on weatherizing.
3) Talk with local volunteers to line up workers for the winterizing
blitz
Key Service Activities
1) Develop a winterizing home plan
2) Train volunteers in winterizing techniques
3) Create an advertising plan to get the work out and sign up
elderly home owners
Key Reflection Activities
1. (oral) Discuss with volunteers suggestions for improvement
of the program next year
2. (written) Write thank you letters for all who participate in
the program.
3. (performance) Students will develop, write and act out a brief
5-minute play that details what might happen if weatherizing does
not occur. Students will perform this skit for senior citizens
prior to their presentation of the brochures.
Demonstration Activity
Student advocates will sponsor a spaghetti dinner for senior
citizens. During the entertainment portion of the dinner, students
will perform their skit, pass out and explain their brochures,
and answer questions from the audience.
