Service Learning Project Description:
Students perform a litter analysis on a local downtown street.
After collecting 5 bags of litter the students classify the litter
and attempt to determine where the litter most likely came from.
Analysis of the litter indicates that the bulk of the litter was
from a small fast food restaurant near the school. Students then
met with community leaders and restaurant owners to develop a plan
to start a Stop Litter campaign. Developing posters for local stores,
increasing the number of municipal waste cans, and final involving
local students in clean up efforts.

point source pollution in a way appropriate to the problem and
providing possible solutions.

1. Collect pollution and identify original sources.
2. Determine who the most likely offenders are in the community

2. Distribute pollution findings to the authorities, with possible
solutions.

its possible impact.
3. (performance) Final letter to the editor thanking all the people
involved in the project.
Demonstration Activity
Students will organize a Civic Pride Walk, where they will show
off the improvements made during the project and thank the individuals
that made it possible. Key members of the community will be invited,
such as the town mayor, the owner of the fast food restaurant,
the town buildings and grounds crew, etc.
