Like Curriculum Mapping, Literacy itself is not a methodology. In the past literacy was treated as an area of study. In isolation, literacy education in the form of Grammar or Punctuation lessons have proven to be ineffectual. Instead, literacy experts believe that authentic literacy skills, reading with a purpose, writing with a purpose and in-depth discussions, are more likely to provide an improvement in overall literacy attainment. "Service Learning" relies on excellent communication skills providing the opportunity for students to learn literacy in an authentic mode.
